Ratnapura, Elapatha Maha Vidyalaya ( R/ Elapatha School )
R/ Elapatha vidyalaya (school) was begun on 11th September 1942 at Kanupavita by Rev. Ginihiriya Sri Siddharthodaya Parivenadhipathi thero ( the head priest of Ginihiriya Sri Siddharthodaya Pirivena). First principal was Mr. L. Gunawardane. There were 22 children in 5 grades and 2 teachers known as Mrs. G. Premawathie and Mr. E. W. Punchimahathma. First student was R. A. Dharmadasa.
It became a government school in 1946 and was brought to a new place at Elapatha village in 1952. The new site with a building was presented by Mr. A. D. Elapatha.
The R/ Elapatha V. became the R/ Elapatha M. V. in 1954. It began its A/L studies in 1979 and became a cluster school on 8th February 1988.
12 principals were working since the biginning. Mr. Gamini Mathugama is working as the principal since 1996. Now, the school has 64 teachers.
Sport houses are Saman, Ruwan and Nuwan.
In 1995, candidates of the examination of grade 5 for scholarships were 86. But, there wasn't any passed students.
In 2002, 5 students passed out of 131 candidates.
In 1995, 15 students were qualified for A/L studies out of 96 candidates of O/L examination.
In 2002, 22 students were qualified for A/L studies out of 72 candidates of O/L examination.
In 1995, 3 students were qualified for universities out of 6 candidates. A student entered to the university.
In 2002, 53 students were qualified for universities out of 102 candidates. 6 students entered to the university.
